In 1880, on the advice of his doctor and close friend Professor Peter, Alfred Stevens began to spend time at the seaside to paint and to recover his health. With an annual stipend and exclusivity contract from Georges Petit, Stevens travelled to Le Havre from 1881-1883 and created numerous views of tumultuous seas below stormy skies. This began a new motif in Steven’s work that continued through the 1890s. He painted in Sainte-Adresse in 1884 and in Normandy in 1890, including Honfleur in 1891-92 and around Dieppe in 1893. It is this latter location is likely depicted in the current work.
